Relying on a wood boiler and fireplace requires a different level of engagement in home heating. While 76% of Hungarian households use piped gas for heating, this recreational region has never been connected to the gas grid. Ádám and Orsi’s house is equipped with a gas tank, but the cost to fill it would be 1.5 times that of piped gas. Even the gas company advises them against using it: the house will simply leak heat through every window, door and wall, as well as the floors and roof, resulting in high energy bills for low thermal comfort.
