Because of a respiratory condition, Maria needs a machine to help her breath at night and sometimes during the day, particularly when it gets very hot in summer.

Maria lives with her husband Luis (who also has medical problems) and their seven children. Together, they get social assistance of about €650/month. The need for medical equipment is a Catch-22; while necessary, it drives up their electricity bill.
