Across England, properties in need of costly refurbishment often sit vacant, adding to the problem of housing scarcity and, in turn, homelessness.

To address growing homelessness among young people, the Self-Help Housing Network project began with the purchase and refurbishment of a single property. Today, it continues the work with a ‘self-renovation’ scheme that trains vulnerable youth in construction then puts their skills to use in fixing up their future homes. Using donated and recycled building materials helps keep costs low.

The Project then rents the ‘new’ properties for an affordable price and helps residents access support from social services.

To date, the Self-Help Housing Network has brought 65 properties back into use, trained 30 apprentices and secured 60 work placements. By improving the energy efficiency of the properties, the Network is also reducing energy poverty in the neighbourhoods they work in.
