Stanislaw, a friend of the family, stands in the hallway of the building Ryszard Kowalski moved into in the 1970s with his wife Hanna and her parents. Some 40 years on, the family composition has changed: today, Ryszard and Hanna are the retired grandparents, living with their own son and daughter, Stefan and Iwona, as well as Hanna's sister Krystyna and her daughter Katarzyna, who has three daughters. Over this time, little has been done to maintain or improve the building.
